JAN MEETS MIES

The ‘buildings’ that established Mies van der Rohe’s reputation as a modernist exist only as drawings. In this project, a detailed design was developed, accompanied by an up-to-date 1:10 scale model of the façade of this never-realized masterwork.

This work provided my first experience with creating molds for concrete. While concrete is often associated with robustness and coarseness, it proved remarkably capable of capturing fine details, such as the cutting direction of the foam used in the mold.

The work of Jan Schoonhoven has always been a source of fascination not only for its interplay of light and shadow but also for its inherent lightness. His oeuvre is defined not only by its white color but also by the lightweight materials employed. Translating this sense of lightness into a concrete façade creates a compelling dialogue: what is originally a delicate, featherweight artwork is transformed into a monumental, brutalist architectural gesture.

The façade reveals a different character depending on the time of day, the weather, and the season.
